The Permaculture Schools Open Day
Nurturing Community Development Initiatives in Africa (NCDI) Africa was honoured to attend the Permaculture Schools Open Day organised by AFIRD on the 20th at Bujuuko UMEA Primary School, Mpigi District.
The event, themed “Empowering Youth Voices for Environmental and Indigenous Food Conservation,” brought together learners, teachers, community leaders, and other stakeholders, including PELUM Uganda Secretariat, SCOPE, Slow Food Uganda, and others committed to sustainable agriculture and youth empowerment. Participating schools included St. Michael Bume Primary School, Bujuuko UMEA Primary School, St. Charles Lwanga Kibanga Primary School, Bugayi Foundation Primary School, and Nakirebe St. Joseph Mannyogaseke Primary School.
Learners showcased an impressive range of agroecology innovations and products, including:
- Small permaculture gardens (spinach, sukuma wiki, tomatoes, eggplants, cocoa, indigenous crops)
- Indigenous foods such as matooke, cassava, yams, and sweet potatoes
- Innovative organic and herbal products (fertilizers from grass, herbal preparations, rabbit urine collection)
- Crafts and animal husbandry (rabbits and poultry)
NCDI Africa had the privilege of serving on the panel of judges, visiting each stall, asking questions, and evaluating the learners’ work. We were inspired by their creativity, skills, and understanding of permaculture principles. These young learners are not just exhibiting products they are developing practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and entrepreneurial thinking, building a strong foundation for sustainable livelihoods and community development.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to AFIRD for training and mentoring young people in permaculture, agroecology, and indigenous food conservation. Your work is nurturing a generation that values environmental stewardship, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience.
As NCDI, we remain committed to strengthening partnerships with AFIRD and supporting initiatives that empower young people, households, and communities to adopt sustainable, climate-smart practices. Together, we are cultivating the next generation of innovators and leaders in sustainable food systems.
