Nurturing Community Development Initiatives in Africa (NCDI) is a Ugandan national non-governmental organisation working to improve the well-being and livelihoods of underserved rural communities. Founded in 2019 and registered in 2022 we strongly focus on young people, women and vulnerable children. Our programmes connect health and mental well-being, education and practical skills, sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and food and nutrition security.

We work alongside communities and local partners supporting people to shape the decisions that affect their lives. We are guided by the principles of by inclusion, equity and community ownership.

Mission

To nurture and support community-led development initiatives that improve livelihoods, health, education, and agency for vulnerable populations in Uganda.

Why Our Work Matters
With about 78% of Uganda’s population under 30 and over 75% living in rural areas, young people are the country’s greatest asset. Yet many face widespread youth unemployment, limited access to quality health services, low literacy levels, inadequate provision of vocational and life skills, and growing climate risks.

For rural families, health, education, food and livelihoods are closely connected. A child who lacks nutritious meals may struggle to learn. A young person with formal education may still need practical skills and support to find work or develop an enterprise. Farming households need healthy soils and access to resources and markets to provide food and earn an income. Mental health is equally important: youth, women and men in rural communities may all face stress, trauma or isolation within their context and need safe spaces and appropriate support to stay engaged in learning, work and community life.

NCDI Africa responds to these connected needs through community-led initiatives. We build on local knowledge and structures and work with partners to help communities access relevant support and create opportunities for lasting improvement.
